The Story of Us

Challenge

The UK is one of the worst age divided countries in the world for a number of different reasons including a lack of mutual empathy and understanding across generations. This leads to a lack of trust and negatively affects both sides of the divide as they have a limited view of the world.

Solution

The Story of Us is a community project that aims to bridge the age divide on a local level by encouraging people of different generations to mix based on their interests rather than focusing on generational stereotypes. This project uses Alton, Hampshire as the subject and begins with a pre-event pack containing a newsprint educational booklet, map of the town with event areas, stamp booklet and postcard to customise.

The visual identity is inspired by the concept of creating connections in the form of rope and knots. The design flows together to show the flow of the individuals and comes together at different points representing people meeting and finding common ground. The form of the map also shows this rope concept through the folded format.

Residents are encouraged to explore the areas around the town that are dedicated to various interests and talk to people of a different generation using the spatial design elements and conversation starters both in the area and on their customised postcards.
